Summary
Khao Sok in southern Thailand has long been known for its beautiful rainforest, diverse fauna & flora, and its impressive bird population. Consisting of steep forested limstone slopes, jagged peaks and some smaller areas of lowland habitat, the park offers a range of good birding habitat.

In 1986-1987 part of the park was flooded with the creation of the Chiew Larn hydro-electric dam. A trip by boat on the lake that was formed allows for great views of the forest and its bird population. Some of the vulnerable or endangered bird species that can be found in Khao Sok include White Stork, Crested Fireback, Great Argus, Masked Finfoot, Cinnamon-rumped Trogon, Banded Pitta, Black and Red Broadbill, Pin-tailed Parrotfinch, Olive-backed Woodpecker and at least six species of hornbills.

Close to the park, other great birding locations include Kapong and Pakarung beach. It is typical to find in the region of 80-90 species of birds on this 3-day trip.

In the afternoon of day 3, a 15 minute transfer by road to Krapong, where a wide variety of habitats (grassland, pond, river sandbar, rainforest, marsh) make for some interesting birding.
