This comprehensive three week tour contrasts urban and rural life of Vietnam including two modern bustling cities of Saigon and Hanoi and the stunning beauty and simplicity of the Mekong Delta.

We start the tour in the busy city of Saigon. Travellers always notice first the plethora of motor bikes, buzzing around the city. Few pedestrians walk the streets.. nearly everyone 'bikes' it.. old or young. The city has changed dramatically within the last decade to rival any international city in technology, consumerism and modern architecture.

Vietnam has many cultural influences spanning over 200 years and we visit the History Museum to appreciate the historical background that will be important for the rest of the tour.

A wonderful day trip to the mysterious Mekong Delta shows us a fertile land with an enormous output of fish, fruit, vegetables, rice and wood products. We drift down the narrow Mekong River tributaries, deep into the dense tropical jungle and have lunch at a bee farm and tasting honey fresh from active honeycombs. Here also we see the array of crafts and products that the cococut tree can yield.

Next we fly to Nha Trang and learn about the history of Vietnam at the Ancient Champa Temple. We go to the coast to see the rock mountain and visit the aquarium, pagoda and at the Spa just outside the city we relax in mud baths and warm spring pools. Additional free time can be spent swimming and sunbathing at Nha Trang's recently renovated beach where you can be pampered.

At Hoi An, described as a living museum with a history dating back over 2000 years we spend a few days exploring it's rich culture. The Chinese influence is apparent with the distinguished wooden building that incredibly were relatively untouched by the American war. We also take a trip to the Marble Mountain and see buddas cut out of the mountain walls, plus beautiful buddist caves. This area is renowned for it's marble carving market where you can size object and all shipping is taken care of. We will also relax at the beautiful and unspoilt beaches with the turquoise blue warm sea.

Next we take four hour bus trip to Hué which was at the centre of politiclal unrest, cultural innovation and educational excellence.
We spend 3 days here exploring the riches of architecture and history that the city offers.

We fly to North Vietnam and stay in the capital city, Hanoi, in which there is much to see and do. Then we take a day cruise around Halong Bay with it's towering Limestone rocks. We will sleep in comfortable berths aboard our boat and next day we spend time cruising, kayaking and swimming.

Back in Hanoi we will visit Hoa Lu, the Ancient Kingdom. At this point the tour ends.

The optional extension after this will take us to Ankor in Cambodia (see Cambodia section)

This introductory tour is best taken in combination with short tours of Thailand and/or Cambodia, giving you a taste of asia. After this you will undoubtably return for a more leisurely discovery in all or any of these countries.

Day 1: Arrive during day in Saigon at 'colonial' style hotel.
Day 2: Guided tour around city and museum
Day 3: Day trip to Mekong Delta
Day 4: Fly to Hoi An - explore the city
Day 5: Music concert, japanese bridge - more of Hoi An
Day 6: Fly North to Hanoi in morning - guided tour of Hanoi all day
Day 7: Lunchtime leave for cruise of Halong Bay - sleep on boat
Day 8: Back to Hanoi around midday . End of tour, transport to Hanoi airport depending on your flight times.
